ANSI Z87.1 —
The Foundation

ANSI Z87.1 is the benchmark standard for eye and face protection in North America, published by the American National Standards Institute. It defines minimum requirements for protective eyewear used in occupational and educational settings.

To carry the Z87.1 mark, lenses and frames must pass a series of independent lab tests covering impact resistance, lens distortion, flammability, and more. This is the certification required by OSHA for workplace eye protection.

Every pair of Sunneys — Rangers, Classics, and Blitz Creek — meets ANSI Z87.1. If your workplace requires certified safety glasses, all three styles qualify.

🎯
High Velocity Impact

Lenses must withstand a 6mm steel ball traveling at 45 m/s without fracture or displacement.

🔩
High Mass Impact

A 500g pointed weight dropped from 127cm must not cause the lens to contact the eye form.

🔬
Optical Quality

Lenses are tested for refractive power, prismatic power, and distortion to ensure clear vision without strain.

ANSI Z87.1+ —
The Upgrade

The "+" designation means a product has passed more rigorous impact testing than the baseline Z87.1 standard. Specifically, it must survive both the high-velocity ball test AND the high-mass drop test — where the base standard only requires one.

Z87.1+ is required in environments with elevated hazard exposure: grinding, heavy fabrication, chipping, demolition, and anywhere flying debris is a significant risk.

The Blitz Creek is the only Sunneys product currently rated Z87.1+. Its integrated side shield design also contributes to superior protection coverage compared to frame-only styles.

⬆️
Both Impact Tests Required

Z87.1+ products must pass both high velocity AND high mass impact — not just one or the other.

🛡️
Marking Requirement

Z87.1+ glasses are marked with "Z87+" on both the lens and the frame so inspectors can verify compliance at a glance.

Recommended For

Grinding, chipping, machining, demolition, and any environment with a higher-than-average risk of impact hazards.

ANSI Z87.1+

Enhanced impact-rated protection. Requires passing BOTH high velocity and high mass impact tests.

CSA Z94.3 —
Made for Canada

The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Z94.3 standard governs eye and face protection requirements specifically within Canada. It is the domestic equivalent of ANSI Z87.1 and is referenced by provincial occupational health and safety regulations across Canada.

While ANSI Z87.1 is widely accepted across Canada, some workplaces specifically require CSA-marked eyewear. Check your site’s PPE policy — if it requires the CSA mark, note that Sunneys products do not carry it. If it requires impact-rated eye protection generally, every Sunneys model qualifies under ANSI Z87.1.

The Blitz Creek is designed and tested to meet the requirements of CSA Z94.3 — it is compliant with the standard, but has not been submitted for formal CSA Group certification and does not carry the CSA mark. It also carries ANSI Z87.1+ certification, making it the most compliance-ready pair in the Sunneys lineup.

🍁
Canadian Regulatory Compliance

Provincial OHS regulations across Canada require impact-rated eye protection on the job. Requirements vary by province and employer — always confirm your site’s specific PPE policy.

🔒
Certified vs. Compliant

“CSA certified” means independent testing by CSA Group and a license to carry their mark. “CSA Z94.3 compliant” means the product meets the standard’s performance requirements without the formal mark.

Beyond the
Cert Marks

UV400
99.9% UV Blockage

Every Sunneys lens blocks 99.9% of UVA and UVB rays up to 400 nanometers. This is true for both clear and shaded variants — your eyes are protected from solar radiation whether or not the lens is tinted.

Long-term UV exposure is a leading cause of cataracts and macular degeneration. UV400 protection is something every pair of work glasses should have, and we include it as standard.

Anti-Fog
Lens Coating — All Models

Fogged lenses are a safety hazard. That's why anti-fog lens coating is not an upgrade or add-on on Sunneys glasses — it's standard on every single pair we make.

The coating works by reducing surface tension so moisture spreads into a thin, transparent film rather than forming droplets. It's effective in hot/cold transitions, high-humidity environments, and when wearing a mask or respirator underneath.
